Hello there,

Still missing my Panasonic FZ-50 immensely, but I do feel I have gotten the grips with my Canon EOS 500D.

Of course, it’s all a matter of training. I have read all parts of the user manual, except the section about using it as a video camera, a thing I don’t think I’ll ever use, several times. I have shot plenty of pictures, and I have processed almost just as many pictures in my trusted Lightroom 3.2.

So now I feel I know it a lot better, and I know what I can do with it. It’s still on “Manual” almost all the time. I use my spot meter, which I’ve always done, on the important part and compensate depending on the tone I want it to be. This is actually a method developed by Ansel Adams, he called it “the Zone System”. It works pretty well.

But now I’ve got a new dilemma. I need some new lenses. First and foremost I need a macro-lens in the zoom range of appr. 70 – 100mm. I’ve found one from Sigma, but I fear this will be a never ending story. Because if I purchase the Sigma, I’ll surely find more needs of lenses in the future. In fact, I already have.

And, honestly, why not purchase a complete new camera instead? The new Nikon Coolpix P500 e.g. boasts an incredible zoom range and macro function. And the price of it is more or less the same as the price of the Sigma lens alone!

Besides, I never understood the fuss about digital single lens reflex cameras. In the days of film it made perfectly sense, but having gone digital, why not exploit the system and see the results of one’s settings as a “live-view” in the viewfinder?

Until next time,
